Mobius Arch, Alabama Hills

Mobius Arch, Alabama Hills

I almost didn't get to take this picture today. Why? Because I was almost devoured by a pack of ravenous....mules.

The mules used as pack animals in the sierras are herded down into the Owens valley every fall to overwinter on BLM and LADWP land. I discovered this rather by accident last year when I drove out into the valley above Independence to photograph the main intake of the Los Angeles aqueduct, and walked back to my car (you go through a gate--trespassing is not forbidden, just a sign to please close the gate so you don't let the mules out) on the little dirt road, and was surrounded by about 10 enormous and friendly sierra mules. Friendly in a nice way. Friendly in a "you can walk up and give me nose scratches, and I'll just stand here and be docile and nice" kind of way.

So I thought about those mules a lot (I'm kind of an animal nut), and today we decided to pay them a visit on our way back from Bishop. We stopped at the Vons in Bishop and picked up a bag of carrots and a bag of apples, and headed down to their overwintering place to give them a little treat.

Cool. Got in, closed the gate behind us, drove a ways down the dirt road and saw some mules. We parked, got out, and tried to coax one over for a carrot. He was wary at first, but as soon as he tasted that carrot, he was all "OMG GIVE ME MORE NOW NOW NOW." He was pushy. And REALLY big. Like, physically, knock-you-over pushy. And so were his THIRTY FREAKING HUGE MULE FRIENDS. It was like we were attacked by a really aggressive gang of street mules. It was a mob. We started just throwing the carrots and apples, hoping they'd wander off to eat them, but that didn't work (some did wander off and eat them, but the others kept us surrounded).

I was going take some pictures of the big, friendly mules, but one of them thought my L lens looked DELICIOUS (and sidled up behind me to slobber on it--ew), so I ended up just clutching my camera to me protectively as I tried to push through the behemoths and get to the car. I'm 5'5", and couldn't even see over the backs of a lot of these guys--enormous animals.

Anyway, we made it safely to the car, which they then surrounded and peered creepily through the windows. All the windows. On all sides of the car. One of them tried to eat the little windshield washer fluid knob thingie on the hood (while it still had a mouth full of apple--I had to clean apple bits and mule slobber out of it later when we stopped for gas). With a series of honking and very slow, patient advances, we drove out of the herd. Gordon mutters "well, that was a dumb idea...." You know what they say about good intentions. Lesson learned: feel free to visit the mules, just don't bring treats. They morph into satanic vampire mules when offered treats.

Fortunately, we survived the near massacre-by-mule, and made it down to the Alabama Hills in time to catch some nice cloud action and afternoon light. When I've shot this in the past, it's always been at sunrise, so I thought I'd see how it looks at a different time of day. I also tried to get a slightly different angle on the arch, something other than the same view that we ALL shoot...

Four Rings

Four Rings

Hi.

So... I feel really weird posting pictures at this point (and a car picture, at that). I feel like I've been gone for way too long. I think it's been 4 months, almost 5. So I have a lot of catching up to do. It's not that I didn't take pictures for the past 5 months, it's just that I never actually had time to look at them and do anything with them once they were taken. After a while, dozens turn to hundreds, hundreds to thousands... and I had way too many pictures to edit.

I'm kind of just starting over at this point. Getting the best out of what was there and then moving on.

So much has happened since I stopped Flickring. I've had a girlfriend for almost 5 months, live in my own apartment, and bought my own car. The first few pictures I post are just gonna have to do with catching up on what's been going on.

As for the car, it's a 2003 Audi A4 (5 speed, 1.8T Quattro, and bone stock at this point) and I kind of love it. It has weird quirks like any German car, but it's really fun when it matters. This is just the obligatory "LOL LOOK, CAR" picture. It needs to be hardcore cleaned and the paint needs some love, then I'll start doing cool pictures of it. Oh and the back window spontaneously rolls down... which needs to be fixed too.

Also, learning to drive stick on a nice car is really, really scary. Definitely not the best idea, hahaha.

I'll check out streams and say hi to everyone soon. I have an unusual amount of free time right now so I'm gonna make use of it!

Oh and funny pictures involving inanimate objects are on the way, haha. Unfortunately Mr. Marshmallow was MIA for a while, but I have something to take its place for a bit which will hopefully make up for that.

Cute girlfriend pictures, too!

And just lots of good things in general.

"BE ON GUARD AGAINST THE STRATEGY AND TACTICS OF THE ENEMY SO AS TO DEFEND THE COUNTRY, THE PEOPLE AND THE PARTY!" |

(PORTRAIT OF CAMBODIAN VOEUK PEACH, MURDERED AT THE S-21 KILLING CENTER, PNOMN PENH, ON OR SHORTLY BEFORE OCTOBER 11, 1977)

22" H X 19" W
Ink, gouache. 2005.
(framed)

Drawn from a photo in the book "Voices from S-21 - Terror and History in Pol Pot's Secret Prison," by David Chandler (Univ. of California Press, '99).
Next to the mug shot of Peach (which the drawing was done from) is a post-mortem photo of Peach with a hand-painted sign on his chest dated 11-10-77. The photos are attributed to the Photo Archive Group. Footnotes state the PAG staff cleaned, developed and archived over 6 thousand negatives found at the site in 1994-95.
S-21 had been a high school before the Khmer Rouge takeover of Cambodia in 1975. It became a museum in 1979. Most of the photos are viewable on the CD-Rom prepared by the Cambodia Genocide Program at Yale University. [Check the Yale U website for more info].
Chanler writes that when the Vietnamese army invaded Cambodia in January 1979, most of Phnom Penh (the capital city) was empty. "No people or animals could be seen."
"On Jan. 8th two Vietnamese photojournalists were drawn towards a particular compound by the smell of decomposing bodies...they found themselves on the grounds of what appeared once to have been a high school. Over the gate was a red placard inscribed in yellow with a Khmer (Rouge) slogan:
FORTIFY THE SPIRIT OF THE REVOLUTION! BE ON YOUR GUARD AGAINST THE STRATEGY AND TACTICS OF THE ENEMY SO AS TO DEFEND THE COUNTRY, THE PEOPLE AND THE PARTY."
"....Between April '75 and the first week of 1979...at least 14,000 men, women and children had been held by S-21. Because the entry records for several months of 1978 were incomplete, the true number of victims was undoubtedly higher.
"...Of the documented prisoners, all but a dozen specially exempted ones, including Ung Pech [who became the director of the museum when it opened in 1980] had been put to death...Since 1979, seven of those 12 prisoners have come forward [for interviews.]
"...The resemblance between S-21 and Nazi deaths camps are striking...Works discussing the Holocaust provide insight in the psychology of torturers, administrators and victims at the prison.
"...The most striking difference between the German and Cambodian cases lies in the extent of documentation
produced at S-21....In Nazi Germany, political prisoners were kept in separate camps from those targeted for execution and were somewhat better treated. At S-21, all were charged with political offenses and were to be killed.
"...Like the Nazi death camps and the Argentine torture facilities, S-21 was a secret facility...a factory worker in a nearby compound, interviewed in 1989, referred to S-21 as "the place where people went in but never came out."
For those interested in learning more about how this "auto-genocide" [mass murder of Cambodians by Cambodians] began and history, Chanler also addresses the Reign of Terror in 18th century France; the Moscow "Show Trials" of the 1930's; land reform and "re-education" campaigns in the late 1940's and in Vietnam a decade later.

Bent Rotor

Bent Rotor

Well I figured out today that I didn't strip the motor of lubricant, as it doesn't have any.
It uses sapphire bearings.
What happened was at some point I bent the original rotor. (I probably did it when messing around seeing how it works)
Well since I took apart a CD-Rom to get the vibration dampeners, I also had two spare rails. These are the steel rails that the laser head runs along.
They happen to be exactly the same size as the bent rotor.
Using some WD40 and my drill I removed the old rotor by spinning it out.
(A hammer or something else would risk warping the blade)
I then installed the new rail and tweaked until the blade sat just right.
I then removed it, dremeled it down to size, cleaned, and reinstalled it.
The pump now has no vibrations.

I Spy Treasure Hunt Deluxe v2.0 w/I SPY Book & Bonus Mini CD-Rom

Topics Entertainment I Spy Treasure Hunt. Windows/Mac. EAN 9780439820691; ISBN 0439820693

Pirate's plunder rewards players who discover all of the hidden objects and decipher the riddles in I Spy Treasure Hunt. But there's also a bounty of booty on the path to that treasure as players discover this captivating world where closer inspection invariably reveals a new surprise.
This program is based on the award-winning I Spy books written by Jean Marzollo and photo-illustrated by Walter Wick. From the very beginning, this program immerses players, just as the books do: as a train pulls into the station in the town of Smuggler's Cove, the point-of-view is from inside the passenger car, looking out the window. Once off the train, this quaint seaside town with a secret is yours to explore. Potential riddle spots reveal themselves when a cursor sweep causes an object to respond with movement and sound. A tackle box, a deserted ruin, and a lighthouse are just a few of the 20 spots ripe for discovery. Scenes change swiftly, considering the vast amount of detail each contains. When explorers find a riddle area, a cluttered panorama appears onscreen and a child's voice reads the sentence below that always begins with the phrase "I spy...." Then players must find and click on the objects listed in the sentence. This isn't as easy as it seems; for example, finding three "fours" sounds simple, right? But the task gets complex when one numeral is hidden in the grain of a wooden tabletop, the other is written out in letters on a menu, and the third is a pair of dice showing a three and a one.
Successfully finding all the "I Spy" items in a scene yields a scrap of a treasure map. But building the map doesn't automatically reveal the treasure--that'd be out of keeping with this game's complex character. There are three different treasure-hunting scenarios, and each requires gathering a completely different set of clues around the town of Smuggler's Cove. The attention to detail that the books are famous for is abundantly present here: sound permeates the different "sets," from waves breaking on the shore, to the slow tick of a clock in the general store. Find and click on a skull-and-crossbones--it scowls and growls. Find and click on an oil lamp--it flares up briefly and then goes out with a delicate puff of smoke. And no, you can't cheat by just holding down the mouse button and scanning over a picture hoping to hit a required item. I Spy Treasure Hunt is a wonderfully absorbing program that slyly sneaks in a vast amount of learning. Mapping, reading, rhyming, and problem solving occur incidentally as players are drawn into the mysteries of Smuggler's Cove. And it's the only program we've ever encountered that elegantly illustrates that "four" and "4" and "." + "..." all equal the same thing. (Ages 6 to 10) --Anne Erickson
