Santa in April?

Santa in April?

I'm only showing this drawing because it's a part of my daily drawings in my sketchbook. It's the one I used for the lino block print a couple of weeks ago.

I'm taking Tanner to go to work with his dad this morning (Dan does landscaping) and then I've got some finishing touches to do to get ready for my sister's arrival tonight.

Last night we watched the Lemony Snickets movie, A Series of Unfortunate Events. I had gotten it at Costco yesterday. As usual I was drawing so didn't watch carefully but what I did see I enjoyed. I'll watch it again soon and try to pay more attention.

I've decided that the lino design I'm going to do while my sister is here will be a book plate. Probably for a dear friend who has tons of books and loves bird watching and is originally from Holland. I think it will be fairly easy for me to come up with a design that fits her. If I can't come up with a design in short order then I'll do one for myself with yesterdays butterfly. Then I'll do the one for the friend.

Last night Tanner and I went with Paul to a 1.2 million dollar home that is part of our annual Parade of Homes. It was spectacular to say the least. It sits high above the valley on a mountain surrounded by hills and rock, the view of the valley is spectacular, you can see all the way to the horizon from the place. The home has 6000 square feet of living space and it's all very high quality with gorgeous polished woods, stones, rich carpets and furnishings a home theater and all. Tanner got to spend the whole 3 hours with the guy in the home theater watching movies and enjoying the comfort. If I can find any pictures of the place I will show you.

I have a nice home, we have a nice view but let me tell you that I had never seen anything like the view from that place! I am not wishing to live there and am very happy with my home but it looks very generic after being in a 1.2 million dollar home.

I wouldn't even want a place like that unless I had enough money to hire someone to come in and keep the monster clean, geesh, 6000 square feet is a whole lot of house.

Most of the floors were beautiful wide plank hard woods, black walnut and some cherry and they were polished so that the grain of the woods shone like it was almost metallic. There was extensive wood work, cabinets, pillars and such all done in knotty alder throughout the house. This is all custom woodwork made for the space. The counter tops in the enormous kitchen were granite and there was even a special pasta spout above the 12 burner commercial stove for filling pasta pots. A warming drawer, 2 dishwashers, a fridge that was huge and camouflaged to look like the beautiful cabinets, wine cooler and on and on. This house won all but one of the award given by the home builders association, Best Kitchen, Best Overall design, Best Interior Design etc.

All the doors in the house are 9 foot, solid Alder polished wood, the many windows are almost all 10 feet high so the view is always in sight. The home theater is a huge room with remote controlled room darkening blinds, a bar with dishwasher and fridge, pool table, other game tables and comfy seating for watching movies on the huge screen. There is a big computer in one room that controls the whole house, you can watch a different movie (at the same time) on each of the different flat panel TVs that are throughout the house, listen to different music in each room and control lots of the functions of the home from any computer.
Well, I'm going on and on, sorry. I was just so impressed with it all.

Anyway, after that we went out for Chinese food and then watched our movie. It was a fun night.

The Surrey Hotel, New York City

Surrey Hotel
20 East 76th Street,
New York City, NY 10021

The Surrey Hotel marquee sits between the signs for Daniel Boulud's two outlets - Bar Pleiades and Cafe Boulud.
–--------
The Surrey hotel was built pre-war in Beaux Arts architectural design. The Surrey opened in 1926 as a residence hotel, The Surrey was once home to the likes of JFK and Bette Davis.

In the 1950’s George Kaufman assumed leadership of the Kaufman Organization. Under his guidance, the Kaufman Organization acquired several key properties including the Columbia Pictures building, the McGraw Hill building and the Surrey Hotel.

In August, 2008 Denihan spent $65 million to buy out its majority partner in the 132-suite Surrey Hotel on New York's Upper East Side. The deal was financed by the Canadian bank CIBC.

DHG determined what sort of ambience the hotel should have, which was determined to be “Considered Moments.” That framework helped set the renovation program of the hotel, along with food and beverage and design.

Denihan wanted to add to the residential feel of the hotel. It enlisted Lauren Rottet, of Rottet Studio to employ works by significant artists to improve ambiance and cultural buzz. Rottet slected works by rising stars in the contemporary art world, as well as commissioning artisanry for “feature walls” and other areas of focus.

Rottet chose a Chuck Close wall-sized tapestry portrait of Kate Moss for the Surrey Hotel’s lobby. The Surrey Hotel was listed among the 15 hottest hotel lobbies in New York City by The Huffington Post.

After 12 months and a $60-plus million dollar investment, the privately held Denihan Hospitality Group reopened The Surrey Hotel on November 1, 2009. With the addition of 58 keys to the property, The Surrey now offers 190 guest rooms, including 30 one-bedroom suites, a new 1,150 square-foot Penthouse Suite and the 4,500 sq ft Presidential Suite.

Co-CEO Patrick Denihan commented in the Denihan press release, "DHG's reinvestment in The Surrey is a part of our continued drive for growth through reinvestment in our existing hotels.

Among the Surrey’s assets is its long term relationship with Daniel Boulud.

DHG expanded its relationship with Caf'e Boulud to include a new 1,200 square-foot lobby-level bar, Bar Pleiades, with seating for approximately 75 people as well as private dining options. The hotel has a private rooftop garden available to guests only.

Boulud set out on his own and opened his restaurant Daniel in leased space at the Surrey Hotel, in 1993. Boulud relocated the restaurant Daniel to a new home in 1998 - the lobby of the former Regent Mayfair Hotel which had once housed Le Cirque ( Daniel Boulud was the chef of Le Cirque's four-star kitchen for six years). At the Surrey the original Daniel was re-launched as the Cafe Boulud.

The Denihan Back Story

Denihan Hospitality Group has been owned and operated since 1962 by members of the Denihan family, who in the last 50 years have built the company from one hotel, the 129-suite Affinia Gardens, to a collection of highly-rated, highly profitable hotels in New York City, Chicago, Washington, D.C. and Miami.

The family‘s first venture in New York was an exclusive laundry and dry cleaning business, which opened in the early 1900s. The business was hugely successful, thanks in part to devoted celebrity customers who appreciated the outstanding personal service they received. The Denihan‘s client list reads like a who‘s who of New York: Marilyn Monroe, the Vanderbilt family, and Hattie Carnegie, among many others. It was known The Cleaners to the Stars.

In 1962, Benjamin 'Bud‘ Denihan Sr. entered into the lucrative world of New York City real estate. He built New York‘s first suite hotel, Affinia Gardens, on the East 64th Street site of his laundry and dry cleaning establishment.

By 2011, the company had grown to 13 properties with plans for expansion into additional markets, using proceeds from an equity partnership agreement with Pebblebrook Hotel Trust, which was announced in June 2011. Once the transaction closes, Pebblebrook will have a 49% equity investment in a six-hotel subset of Denihan properties in Manhattan.

    house clean
  • Housekeeping or housecleaning is the systematic process of making a home neat and clean in approximately that order. This may be applied more broadly than just to an individual home, or as a metaphor for a similar "clean up" process applied elsewhere such as a procedural reform.

how do you clean a trumpet - Waking the

Waking the Fallen

Waking the Fallen

Clearly, Avenged Sevenfold have thrown away the rulebook. With Waking the Fallen, their sophomore effort for Hopeless Records, Aveneged Sevenfold (or "A7X") shatter preconceptions of punk and metal. Guitar World (March 2003) said the band "completely blur the line between metal and punk." The magazine also noted that the band would "be as comfortable on the Ozzfest stage as it is playing punk rock dives" A7X marks the beginning of a bold new direction for punk rock and metal. "At first, we were nervous about working with a producer because we didn't want our song structures changed. We didn't want to be formatted into three-minute, verse-chorus-verse songs. We told Mudrock that we want to sound epic, with big harmonies, have clean-sounding vocals like Iron Maiden's, and then go into heavy stuff like Pantera. We wanted to use all those influences and still make it work."

Cool!

Cool!

This shot was taken straight from our terrace at Rattray's camp in Mala Mala! It was a hot day and a big herd of elephants cooled themselves in the Sand River that runs past the camp. Can you imagine having a room with a view like this?

Must share another shory: In the morning we went out on game drive. Just outside Rattray's gates, a herd of elephants was happily roaming around. We parked the car and pretty soon 2 huge males with gigantic tusks approached... And approached a bit more.. and more.. Must admit that I was so excited snapping away that I didn't realize how close they actually were!

All of a sudden one of the giant bulls turned around and his trunk was actually IN the car. And remember, this is a totally open vehicle we're talking about! No roof and no sides. When I looked back I saw Hans making himself as small as possible and backed up in the corner of the car, while the elephant sniffed him up a bit. Behind him, Tracker Phillemon did the opposite: he threw his arms in the air and made a lot of noise.. which made Jumbo retreat.

Normally, at home as well as on safari, Hans is the unchallenged macho and I just knew that after this, he felt just a little.. well.. embarassed I guess.
He asked the ranger what would happen when you would walk up to the fence when there's a herd of elephants on the other side.. Answer: they'll probably take off but, as they know perfectly well how they can take down the fence with their tusks without feeling the current (they had done that on several occasions), there's also a fair chance they will charge you !

That afternoon I went on gamedrive and Hans stayed at the khaya 'working'... (suuuuure..)

All of a sudden he heard trumpeting and went outside. A big herd of elephants was just outside the khaya looking straight at him.. And after the morning's recognition of who was the hero, he just had to prove something to himself. But let's face it; a herd of elephants forms rather a risky opponant, even for a testosteron topped human male, and he was hesitating...

Then, 2 cleaning ladies walked up the path in that gorgeous African way; chatting away, carrying their stuff on their heads, with hip movements we Europeans can only dream off.
Untill... they saw the elephants. One of the ladies froze on the spot but the other just approached the fence, cheerfully shouting. Almost the whole herd took off, trunks held high and trumpeting.... And the ladies walked on peacefully. Only one bull remained..

Our brave hunter-gatherer (Hans) just couldn't let this pass. What one woman could.. he could do for sure!!

Nervous.. adrenaline flowing... he walked up to the fence where the giant Elephant bull was eying him. Gently, step by step, closer.
When he had almost reached the fence, they were eye to eye.. And the Neanderthal took over: screaming, slapping his hands on his but and jumping up and down he showed the elephant who was the ' real' giant over there!!! Jumbo threw his trunk in the air, gave an eardrum-tearing trumpet and ran off....

I wasn't there, but I can just feel how Hans, with his manhood restated, walked back to the khaya.... And I'm sure you can too!! :-)

ps. The fact that he gave permission to share this story with you, shows what a wonderful man he is....

Have a wonderful weekend!!

Outdoor 29 Gallon Planted Aquarium Tank

This planted aquarium evolved over the years. The first couple years, I had problems with green algae bloom--it's because I overpopulated it with fishes, and the plants, or lack thereof, wasn't thriving because of poor choices of subtrate, and neglect. I even put some crawfish, large freshwater shrimp, and apple snails back in the early years, lol.

It became more neglected when I had a new indoor high-end 29-gallon aquarium, with 110 watts of Compact Fluorescent Light for 8-10 hours, Co2 system, and fluorite substrate, with silica sand on the foreground. This is when I did a lot of research, but after couple years, that aquarium retired because I became busy and it was difficult and time consuming to maintain, eventually it became neglected, too. All of the plants that made it transferred to this aquarium tank, a lot of species of plants didn't survive. I missed my Pogostemon helferi, Blyxa japonica, Tonina, and corkscrew vallisneria, to name a few that didn't survive in this condition of environment.

This tank I think is over 5 years, although what you see how the aquatic plants, as well as the terrestrial plants, is arranged and placed is not the same as the previous years. The Bacopa monnieri growing on sand wasn't planned, it just grew from the trimmings that I missed to discard. The Ajuga reptans 'Chocolate Chip' between the salvage cement slab and the base of the aquarium is a new planting which I really love.

This tank does not consume any electricity at all. I do 80 to 90 percent water change twice a month, or more if it seems dirty or the string algae become too much. It get full sunlight during mid-noon for few hours, then a late afternoon sunlight for less than an hour. During those time, the plants are bubbling a lot, oxygenating the water.

Current inhabitants are one electric yellow which I believe is 4 years living in this tank, two convict cichlid (which is an impulse buy a month ago), and one kuhli loach which I rarely see in this tank. There is also lot of ramshorn snail and few trumpet snail, the cleaning crew. I rarely feed the fishes, the electric yellow eats the string algae and other bugs in there, no problems with mosquito. The kuhli loach control the ramshorn snail population and the convict cichlid is learning how to eat the algae, as well. Sometimes I replenish this tank with feeder shrimps.

It's not a Takashi Amano kind of aquascape, which I love and mimic when I had the high end aquarium tank, instead it's more like Diana Walstad, without her theory of adding soil to the substrate.

Mama spent every last penny we had To buy me a dancin' dress

Mama spent every last penny we had To buy me a dancin' dress

I remember it all very well lookin back
It was the summer I turned eighteen
We lived in a one room, rundown shack
On the outskirts of new orleans
We didnt have money for food or rent
To say the least we were hard pressed
Then mama spent every last penny we had
To buy me a dancin dress

Mama washed and combed and curled my hair
And she painted my eyes and lips then I stepped into a satin
Dancin dress that had a split on the side clean up to my hip
It was red velvet trim and it fit me good
Standin back from the lookin glass
There stood a woman where a half gown kid had stood

She said heres your one chance fancy dont let me down
Heres your one chance fancy dont let me down

Mama dabbed a little bit of perfume on my neck
And she kissed my cheek
Then I saw the tears wellin up in her troubled eyes
When she started to speak
She looked at a pitiful shack
And then she looked at me and took a ragged breath
She said your pas run off and Im real sick
And the babys gonna starve to death

She handed me a heart shaped locket that said
To thine own self be true
And I shivered as I watched a roach crawl across
The tow of my high heel shoe
It sounded like somebody else that was talkin
Askin mama what do I do
She said just be nice to the gentlemen fancy
And theyll be nice to you

She said heres your chance fancy dont let me down
Heres your one chance fancy dont let me down
Lord forgive me for what I do, but if you want out
Well its up to you
Now dont let me down you better start movin uptown

Well, that was the last time I saw my ma
The night I left that rickety shack
The welfare people came and took the baby
Mama died and I aint been back

But the wheels of fate had started to turn
And for me there was no way out
And it wasnt very long til I knew exactly
What my mamas been talkin about

I knew what I had to do but I made myself this solemn vow
That is gonna be a lady someday
Though I dont know when or how
I couldnt see spending the rest of my life
With my head hung down in shame you know
I might have been born just plain white trash
But fancy was my name

Heres your one chance fancy dont let me down
Heres your one chance fancy dont let me down

It wasnt very long after a benevolent man
Took me off the street
And one week later I was pourin his tea
In a five room hotel suite

I charmed a king, a congressman
And an occasional aristocrat
Then I got me a georgia mansion
In an elegant new york townhouse flat
And I aint done bad

Now in this world theres a lot of self-righteous hippocrits
That would call me bad
And criticize mama for turning me out
No matter how little we had

But though I aint had to worry bout nothin
For nigh on fifteen years
I can still hear the desperation in my poor
Mamas voice ringin in my ear

She said, heres your one chance fancy dont let me down
Heres your one chance fancy dont let me down
Lord, forgive me for what I do
But if you want out well its up to you
Now dont let me down
Your mamas gonna help you uptown

I guess she did

Here is the first pics of a new wig I picked up in Vegas. You also may notice that my legs and chest are nicely shaven. Yes, this is how I want to be photographed in this outfit. I hope you like it.
