The Surrey Hotel, New York City

The Surrey Hotel, New York City

Surrey Hotel
20 East 76th Street,
New York City, NY 10021

The Surrey Hotel marquee sits between the signs for Daniel Boulud's two outlets - Bar Pleiades and Cafe Boulud.
–--------
The Surrey hotel was built pre-war in Beaux Arts architectural design. The Surrey opened in 1926 as a residence hotel, The Surrey was once home to the likes of JFK and Bette Davis.

In the 1950’s George Kaufman assumed leadership of the Kaufman Organization. Under his guidance, the Kaufman Organization acquired several key properties including the Columbia Pictures building, the McGraw Hill building and the Surrey Hotel.

In August, 2008 Denihan spent $65 million to buy out its majority partner in the 132-suite Surrey Hotel on New York's Upper East Side. The deal was financed by the Canadian bank CIBC.

DHG determined what sort of ambience the hotel should have, which was determined to be “Considered Moments.” That framework helped set the renovation program of the hotel, along with food and beverage and design.

Denihan wanted to add to the residential feel of the hotel. It enlisted Lauren Rottet, of Rottet Studio to employ works by significant artists to improve ambiance and cultural buzz. Rottet slected works by rising stars in the contemporary art world, as well as commissioning artisanry for “feature walls” and other areas of focus.

Rottet chose a Chuck Close wall-sized tapestry portrait of Kate Moss for the Surrey Hotel’s lobby. The Surrey Hotel was listed among the 15 hottest hotel lobbies in New York City by The Huffington Post.

After 12 months and a $60-plus million dollar investment, the privately held Denihan Hospitality Group reopened The Surrey Hotel on November 1, 2009. With the addition of 58 keys to the property, The Surrey now offers 190 guest rooms, including 30 one-bedroom suites, a new 1,150 square-foot Penthouse Suite and the 4,500 sq ft Presidential Suite.

Co-CEO Patrick Denihan commented in the Denihan press release, "DHG's reinvestment in The Surrey is a part of our continued drive for growth through reinvestment in our existing hotels.

Among the Surrey’s assets is its long term relationship with Daniel Boulud.

DHG expanded its relationship with Caf'e Boulud to include a new 1,200 square-foot lobby-level bar, Bar Pleiades, with seating for approximately 75 people as well as private dining options. The hotel has a private rooftop garden available to guests only.

Boulud set out on his own and opened his restaurant Daniel in leased space at the Surrey Hotel, in 1993. Boulud relocated the restaurant Daniel to a new home in 1998 - the lobby of the former Regent Mayfair Hotel which had once housed Le Cirque ( Daniel Boulud was the chef of Le Cirque's four-star kitchen for six years). At the Surrey the original Daniel was re-launched as the Cafe Boulud.

The Denihan Back Story

Denihan Hospitality Group has been owned and operated since 1962 by members of the Denihan family, who in the last 50 years have built the company from one hotel, the 129-suite Affinia Gardens, to a collection of highly-rated, highly profitable hotels in New York City, Chicago, Washington, D.C. and Miami.

The family‘s first venture in New York was an exclusive laundry and dry cleaning business, which opened in the early 1900s. The business was hugely successful, thanks in part to devoted celebrity customers who appreciated the outstanding personal service they received. The Denihan‘s client list reads like a who‘s who of New York: Marilyn Monroe, the Vanderbilt family, and Hattie Carnegie, among many others. It was known The Cleaners to the Stars.

In 1962, Benjamin 'Bud‘ Denihan Sr. entered into the lucrative world of New York City real estate. He built New York‘s first suite hotel, Affinia Gardens, on the East 64th Street site of his laundry and dry cleaning establishment.

By 2011, the company had grown to 13 properties with plans for expansion into additional markets, using proceeds from an equity partnership agreement with Pebblebrook Hotel Trust, which was announced in June 2011. Once the transaction closes, Pebblebrook will have a 49% equity investment in a six-hotel subset of Denihan properties in Manhattan.

    canine teeth
  • In mammals, the teeth next to the incisors that are used for holding preyNoun: An animal that is hunted as food by another animal. Verb: To attempt to take an animal for food. and/or tearing meat.

  • teeth next to the lateral incisors identified by pointed cusp used for tearing food

  • In mammalian oral anatomy, the canine teeth, also called cuspids, dogteeth, fangs, or (in the case of those of the upper jaw) eye teeth, are relatively long, pointed teeth. However, they can appear more flattened, causing them to resemble incisors and leading them to be called incisiform.

Jaguar - Clean Up Time!

Jaguar - Clean Up Time!

Jaguar

"Region: Central and South America
Class: Mammalia
Order: Carnivora
Family: Felidae
Genus: Panthera
Scientific Name: Panthera onca

Description : The jaguar is the largest South American cat. It is powerfully built. It has a large broad head, barrel chest and short massive legs. Its colouration varies from light yellow to reddish-brown, and pales to white or light buff on the underparts. The coat is covered with characteristic dark spots. The spots on the head, neck, limbs, and the underparts are large black blotches, whereas the shoulder, back and flanks have spots forming large rosettes that enclose one or more dots. Melanistic (all black) individuals are common and the spots on such animals can still be seen in certain light. It varies (regionally) in size, weight and length.

Distribution : They are distributed throughout most of Mexico, Central and South America. In recent history they range further north into the southern United States.

Habitat : Mostly deciduous and tropical rainforest, but jaguars can range from montane areas to the wet savanna. Jaguars are often found near freshwater. They prefer to live by rivers, streams, swamps, and marshes. In arid areas they are usually near watercourses.

Food : Deer, peccaries, monkeys, tapirs, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, small rodents, and domestic stock if readily available. They are opportunistic feeders, taking any animal it can catch.

Reproduction and Development : There is no definite mating season. Breeding occurs at any time of the year. Several males may pursue a single female, the dominant one eventually mating. The male may stay with the female up to four or five weeks. Gestation lasts 93 to 105 days. The female gives birth to one to four cubs, usually having two young per litter. She provides all the parenting and gives birth in a den surrounded by a dense thorn thicket, or under tree roots. Cubs are usually born with their eyes closed, weigh about 700-900 grams, and have long coarse fur; buff with black spots. They open their eyes after several days. At seven months they take on the adult colouration and at nine to ten months the cubs are half grown. Cubs suckle for five to six months and start to follow their mother on hunts when they are about six months old. However, they will not hunt alone until they are one to two years of age. At two years of age, the cubs leave their mother to look for their own territory and mate. Female jaguars are sexually mature at about two years of age and males at three to four years. Young males are at first nomadic, jostling with each other until they succeed in claiming a territory. Jaguars are territorial, they mark territories with urine and tree scrapes. Female territories are smaller in size and may overlap. Jaguars are generally solitary. Mothers with young, subadult siblings, and courting or mating individuals are the few occasions that jaguars spend time together.

Adaptations : Jaguars are nocturnal hunters, hunting mostly on the ground or in the water. Jaguars are very strong swimmers, and will follow their prey into the water during the chase. They are also excellent climbers, leaping from a tree or a ledge to ambush their prey. They have exceptionally powerful jaws, strong enough to crush through a turtle shell. With large prey, jaguars commonly bite the head and puncture the skull with their canine teeth. Jaguars dispatch smaller prey by simply breaking their necks. With smaller prey, jaguars will devour the animal entirely. However, large carcasses may be dragged some distance and either buried or hidden in a sheltered area, saved for when the jaguar is hungry again, safeguarding it from scavengers. The jaguar is also a patient hunter of fish. It waits by the water’s edge, occasionally hitting the surface of the water with its tail, which inadvertently attracts fish. As the fish approach the shore, the jaguar swats at them, flipping the fish out of the water then spearing the fish with its sharp claws. The jaguar is one of the four “big cats”. It is the third largest, after tigers and lions, the fourth being the leopard. These are the “roaring cats”, all being quite vocal. The jaguar has a variety of vocalizations including roars, grunts, and mews.

Threats to Survival : Jaguars are persecuted as predators, being viewed as a menace to domestic cattle. They are hunted for sport and for the fur trade. Also, jaguars are threatened by the loss of habitat due to deforestation. Within their range they are regionally extinct in Uruguay and El Salvador and have been eliminated from many of the drier areas of the north.

Status : IUCN: Near Threatened; CITES Appendix 1

Zoo Diet : Feline Diet 6 times a week, rabbits and fish once a week, horsetail or a shank bone once a week."

Every few years I take Floyd to get his teeth cleaned at the veterinarian. I brush the dogs' teeth, but never as often or well as I probably should. At the vet, they knock pets out, put 'em under anesthesia to do the dentals. This always freaks me out a bit, because I have to sign a waiver which basically says, if he accidentally dies due to complications with the anesthesia, I won't hold them accountable. (I sure hate signing that dang paper!)

So anyway, first time I took him to get his teeth cleaned, about 3 or 4 years ago, they pulled about 11 teeth! Most of them were baby teeth just floating loose in the gums, with nothing underneath.
A small dog defect= weird teeth problems.
Chihuahuas have especially weird teeth. I saw a chihuahua in a "Ripley's Believe It or Not" book that had 2 rows of teeth, like a shark. That poor pup had teeth going every which-a-ways!

Okay, so back to the current day. Last month he went to the vet for a cleaning again. Floyd now only has about a dozen teeth left. His most recent cleaning, last month, they pulled another 7 or 8 teeth. One was a loose canine tooth we had noticed earlier. They also had to take one of his rear molars, and some little tiny front teeth. Total bill was over $400!

I tell people he still has most of his "important" teeth. I try to brush them more often now, like 3 times a week, instead of once every 3 weeks.... But the vet says he may eventually lose them all.
I wonder if it is karmic payback for all the people he has bitten? Sometimes we refer to him affectionately as "Lil' Toothless".

6/52 weeks of Molly - Laundry day...

6/52 weeks of Molly - Laundry day...

Well, we finally got some sun and guess what, it's laundry day... The annoying thing when moving to a big city like Paris is that the space you get for your money is quite reduced and you have to make choices. So we do have a tiny washing machine, thank God, but no space for a dryer... Which means we have to go to the laudromat next door to dry our stuff, pfff... The worst part is when we encounter a drunkard who is wasted on the floor, it seems to be the meeting spot some days!! No need to say the whole room stinks when it's supposed to smell clean... Gross! Well, cannot wait to move a bit further and have our own house, green grass to frolic and big washer-dryer!! Still dreaming...

On reve encore ...

The 2011-2016 Outlook for Commercial, Industrial, and Institutional Dry Cleaners for Hard Surfaces in India

The 2011-2016 Outlook for Commercial, Industrial, and Institutional Dry Cleaners for Hard Surfaces in India

This econometric study covers the latent demand outlook for commercial, industrial, and institutional dry cleaners for hard surfaces across the states, union territories and cities of India. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across over 4,900 cities in India. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of it's state or union territory and of India as a whole is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-a-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each state or union territory and city, latent demand estimates are created for commercial, industrial, and institutional dry cleaners for hard surfaces. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

This study does not report actual sales data (which are simply unavailable, in a comparable or consistent manner in virtually all of the cities in India). This study gives, however, my estimates for the latent demand, or the P.I.E., for commercial, industrial, and institutional dry cleaners for hard surfaces in India. It also shows how the P.I.E. is divided and concentrated across the cities and regional markets of India. For each state or union territory, I also show my estimates of how the P.I.E. grows over time. In order to make these estimates, a multi-stage methodology was employed that is often taught in courses on strategic planning at graduate schools of business.

In the early days materials cost more and lasted longer. Feminine fashion, on the other hand, was as fickle as it is today so the dyer filled a very real need. But Alfred Brooks was ambitious; and he looked about him as his successors do today for new ways in which he could use his energy and intelligence to help Bristol's housewives.

All around were the signs of growing Victorian industry Among them were two clear pointers to Brooks' development: dirt and prosperity. When people prosper they look for higher standards-first in their personal possessions, then in their homes. They want the latest London fashions. Cleanliness becomes important.
